Chembur, Mumbai

Residential

February 2021 – August 2021

Bringing a breath of fresh air to a vintage family home, in the leafy bylanes of suburban Mumbai, this abode has been modernized while incorporating some timeless elements. The new generation wanted to feel nostalgic yet live in a home that is more suited to the times. The home was originally designed to accommodate more bedrooms hence making the common areas feel restricted. We opened the spare bedroom and created wood and glass partitions to accommodate a study area that can easily offer privacy when required. This makes the living room much larger when entertaining and brings in tremendous amounts of natural light during the day.

The materials in the overall home are warm and earthy with a traditional nod. This is exemplified by the use of two tones of wood- teak and mahogany, the use of jute in accents and ikat fabrics on the living room furniture.

Brass is another element used as an accent to make the client feel connected to their South Indian heritage.

The transformation of the kitchen is noteworthy, which has been done by strategically removing some walls. Here an island counter stands in terrazzo along with light wood shutters and cabinetries designed to make the kitchen feel warm and inviting.
